You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink.

We are not here to change other people. We are all on a journey in this life, working our way toward happiness and fulfillment. Some of us will reach a place of well-being sooner than others. For those that become mired in struggle and strife, the journey seems fraught with insurmountable challenges. It’s very hard watching loved ones suffer. But we cannot walk their journey for them. Each step they take, each thought they think, each word they speak, and each action they take are theirs and theirs alone.

We can guide them with authenticity, by becoming shining examples of someone following their own truths, engaging in the things that makes us truly happy. We can offer stories of our own personal journeys by describing the path we took to overcome obstacles. But we cannot force them down that road. Everyone must make their own choices.

Let them know you are there for them with a willing ear, a firm shoulder to lean on, and mountains of unconditional love. But they need to figure this out on their own.

In gratitude,
Marissa
